Overview
Mecca is the holiest city in Islam. Mecca is generally considered the "source and cradle of Islam". Mecca is revered in Islam as the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad. And in the Hira Cave atop Jabal al-Nour, just outside Medina, is the place where the Qur'an was first revealed to Muhammad. Visiting Mecca for Hajj is obligatory for all able-bodied Muslims. The Great Mosque of Mecca, known as the Grand Mosque, is home to the Kaaba, which was built by Abraham and his son Ismail. It is one of the holiest places in Islam and is the direction of prayer for all Muslims (the Qibla).
