Armenia is a unitary, multi-party, democratic nation-state with an ancient cultural heritage. The first Armenian state was founded in Urartu in 860 BC, and by the 6th century BC it was replaced by the Armenian satrapy. The Kingdom of Armenia reached its peak under the rule of Tigranes the Great in the first century BC and in 301 became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its official religion. The ancient Armenian kingdom was divided between the Byzantine and Sassanid empires in the early 5th century. Under the rule of the Bagratuni dynasty, the Bagratid kingdom of Armenia was restored in the 9th century. Declined by the wars against the Byzantines, the kingdom fell in 1045 and Armenia was invaded soon after by the Seljuk Turks. It was an Armenian principality and then the Kingdom of Cilician Armenia on the Mediterranean coast between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries.
